Post War

The King is Dead, Long Live the Queen and in 1957
to David and Mary Rich, a daughter. My delighted father
concurs: the New Elizabethans have never had it so good.

My mother’s pride? The attention is not unwelcome.
And she can still wear the latest Bond Street fashions,
all the while making ends meet, unabashed, ‘on tick’.

But the bitter conflict rumbles on: when Mary names the
belligerent baby, Emma, (after David’s brown hen), not
Elizabeth. She declines to satisfy her mother-in-law’s

aspirations. This pretty dark-eyed pawn is not another Rich.
